Meet The Team – Joe Broughton

Next in the series we come back from Daresbury and the pilot plant to our research analyst Joe Broughton. Before Holiferm, he worked in cancer research, focussing on the use of nanoparticles for diagnosis and treatment of cancer. He is as well the proud owner of a patent for a novel pancreatic cancer theranostic. His experience and skill at method development and with various analytical techniques will help ensure not only do we deliver good product, but we continue to keep that innovative edge that will help us replace petrochemical derived surfactants with bio-surfactants.

What are your favourite things to do to relax?

I like audiobooks, recently finished:

  • A Brief History of Everything – Bill Bryson
  • From Russia With Love – Ian Flemming
  • The Devine Comedy – Dante

what is something you picked up during lockdown?

Finished learning to play Liszt – Liebestraum No. 3 on the piano, which I started a few years ago and ran out of time.

Favourite trip/holiday?

The summer between 3rd and 4th year in Paris. 6 weeks of museum, galleries, coffee and cake.

Any pets?

Poe, a named after the Edgar Allan Poe short story “The Black Cat”.

Why did you want to work for Holiferm?

My background is in nanotechnology for cancer research, but when I heard about sophorolipids, I thought that is was a very interesting idea and could see the great potential in the product the Holiferm IP; so, the more I read, the more I became interested.

Hands-on, Supportive, Inventive
