Holiferm jointly publishes paper on the valorisation of waste feedstocks

Holiferm has jointly published a scientific paper with The Winterburn Group from the University of Manchester and the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research / Supergen Bioenergy Hub. The paper is titled ‘Food processing by-products as sources of hydrophilic carbon and nitrogen for sophorolipid production.’ It shows that potato waste could be used as a substrate in our process, which is a great step towards being able to offer fully circular feedstocks.

The paper was put together as a collaboration and based on processes, such as Holiferm’s patented and award winning gravity separation technology, that could use waste streams as part of their process. In particular this paper looks at the use of potato waste as a viable source to be used.

The main highlights of the paper are:

·       Food processing by-products are promising alternative biotechnology feedstocks.

·       Potato, sugar beet and wheat by-products assessed for sophorolipid production

·       Potato waste gave best yield and sophorolipid productivity in batch and fed-batch.

·       Supply chain mapping model demonstrated the impact of facility scale on logistics.

·       Commercialisation must consider biomass drying costs and explore wet processing.

The key take away from this for Holiferm that it shows that we could use potato waste as a substrate in our process. This would be a great step towards Holiferm being able to offer fully circular feedstocks. In doing so we will valorise the waste streams of other companies and thereby make the processes of both companies more environmentally friendly and sustainable.
